Prince set to release new Album of Unreleased Music by June

TIDAL has announced today (May 11) that it will release a new album from the iconic musician with the help of The Prince Estate in 2019. The unreleased music will be sourced from Prince’s vast archive of Vault recordings. The yet untitled album will stream exclusively on TIDAL for fourteen days after which it will be available for download on the platform. A global physical release is being planned via The Prince Estate following the exclusive digital premiere on TIDAL.

TIDAL owner Jay-Z is taking personal interest in the matter. “Our only goal is to share Prince’s music with his fans as he wanted. After thoughtful and honest conversation with him, he chose TIDAL as his partner for HITnRUN Phase One and HITnRUN Phase Two, and we will continue to respect and honor Prince’s enduring legacy and wishes with this new collection,” Jay-Z said.

Troy Carter, speaking on behalf of The Prince Estate, said “I’m very pleased this is resolved, and we get to honor the relationship between Prince and Tidal with this album. We look forward to fans hearing the new music and experiencing the genius of Prince.”

Last year, Tidal and Roc Nation had filed papers alleging that the administrator of Prince’s estate did not have the authority to shop the artist’s songs to competing streaming services. The Prince Estate arranged the late legend’s music to be available on Apple, Spotify and other streaming services prior to the Grammys last year.

Jay Z’s companies claimed to have written and oral agreements with the artist, but supposedly did not turn them over to the estate or Prince’s NPG Records label. NPG said late last year that it had terminated any such agreements the artist may have had before his untimely death on April 21, 2016.

The new agreement between Tidal and The Prince Estate was approved on May 9, 2018 by the Probate Court overseeing The Prince Estate.
